Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to emerge from the back of the mouth.
Most of the time they are in the wrong place, and trying to get out in the wrong direction, which is the leading reason for their removal.
Sometimes they may partially emerge, forming a gum pouch above them that can easily become infected from the mouth. Occasionally they can damage adjacent teeth because of their misaligned growth. They are usually taken out for orthodontic treatment due to lack of space.
A small percentage of procedures can be performed within the framework of normal tooth extraction, but the majority require a surgical procedure performed by an oral surgeon.
There are rare, exceptional cases which require annual control. Here, during the dental check-up, the growth direction and condition of the wisdom teeth should be monitored, and you should be alert to the possibility of cysts.
